Today we i.e. 4^th year of NUSRL have initiated an event. The structure of the event was such where all the guys sitting together having bonfire and pouring their hearts out on specific socio-legal issue.  Today we had chosen the topic of Crime against women v/s Abuse of women centered laws by women. It’s a burning issue of present times.  So here I will try to give the gist of the whole discussion as feel that it should come out.

The discussion started, on the point that yes we are facing crime against women but there another facet also where women are misusing the laws and the social morality. It is because there are cases where due to complaints of wife the police has arrested the old parents , children etc and there is another case where a person when he was acquitted from a rape case and still the society saw him as the “Rapist” he went to supreme Court asking them to give back his integrity and dignity. With this discussion started where someone responded to that it is because of the mentality and for the same reason the deterrent laws for the protection of women cannot be eased. Further the argument came that if there will be convictions these kind of cases of misuse will be reduced. In this I also came to know that in UP there is no Anticipatory bail.

Then many more view points came up such as the legalizing the prostitution may be one of the tool to control the crime against women specially rape and it is said in course of discussion that the suppression of sexual freedom in our society the rape does occur and hence there should be legalized prostitution. But then one incident was brought into light where a woman of 72 years old has been raped and we have case where there is a rape of 4 year, 5 year old girls are being raped so the this justification of sexual freedom cannot stand.  Similarly when the question came up about Pornography and its control as they have the mental effect on men where they commit incidents of rape alike. But then other facet of this was brought up that there is no study where the effect of complete ban pornography has been analyzed. With this debate proceeded to the religion because it is the religion only which can bring morality in the society. Then we also discussed the phallic worship in India (Shivling Puja) or the art and painting of khajuarho temples which is an evident proof that ancient India has the sexual freedom, and it is the mughal after which the parda system came up here. Then someone also came up the issue of virgin brides which is also a very sensitive and an important issue in our society.  Someone responded to that it is because of patriarchy in the society but then other guy brings up the issue of women dominance. He gave example camda kochar where she was asked by her mother-in-law the day when she was promoted to the vice presidency of ICICI just after she came from her office on that day. She didn’t even enter her house.

This is in toto gist of our discussion today. I believe it was really nice that people did come up with their ideas and in a very light environment around the fire we discussed some heated topics of the day. This will continue in near future and yet last but not least
